01 / A closer look
The main chase card of Pitch Black
Mega Darkrai ex 116/084 is the Special Illustration Rare print in the English Pitch Black set. Its collector number extends beyond the set’s 84 regular cards. AKIRA EGAWA receives the printed illustration credit; the card is a 280 HP Basic Darkness-type Mega Evolution Pokémon ex.
[1, 3]Several Mega Darkrai ex prints
Pitch Black also has Mega Darkrai ex as 048/084 Double Rare, 101/084 Ultra Rare and 120/084 Mega Hyper Rare; 116/084 is the Special Illustration Rare.
[5]Moves on the card
The card has 280 HP, Grass weakness, a retreat cost of 2 and regulation mark J.
[3]02 / Behind the artwork
AKIRA EGAWA
Illustrator and character designer AKIRA EGAWA brings a background in 3D modelling to richly textured, dramatic worlds. Her work spans trading cards, game characters and illustration books.
AKIRA EGAWA’s portfolio spans illustration and character design, following earlier work on 3D game backgrounds. Her published work uses strong contrasts of colour, light and surface texture.
An official Pokémon interview discusses the settings she imagined for Ninetales and Machoke. Her portfolio also lists book and mythological illustration commissions, linked below.
[6, 7, 3, 4]More cards. Same imagination.
Ninetales’ curling tails sweep around its body above a distant band of lights, with orange edges standing out against violet shadow. Mega Darkrai ex also builds movement from long, flowing contours, but its near-monochrome web of white lines is much denser and more enclosing.
Machoke’s reaching hand and broad shoulders press toward the viewer, framed by the hard lines of a metallic interior. Mega Darkrai ex creates a similar forward pressure, but replaces the readable solid body and straight background edges with tangled, fluid forms.
Beyond the cards
A commissioned mythological illustration listed in Egawa’s own portfolio, extending her character-led work beyond trading cards.
The artist’s portfolio identifies this as her book-cover illustration. It provides another way to explore the painted surfaces and character design in her work.
03 / The collector
Liquid but cooling
PriceCharting reports about one ungraded sale a day and about six PSA 10 sales a day for this card, so copies sell often. TCGplayer sales listed on PriceCharting fell from about $277 in early August to about $135 to $141 in late October 2026, so sellers should expect a softening market.

About the evidence
- Sold listings are as reported by PriceCharting and were not individually checked; they are US eBay sales.
- Raw prices depend heavily on condition, which was not assessed.
- The card image is reference artwork, not the customer's card.
Population. The identified card is raw (ungraded); a PSA population report counts only graded copies, so there is no population for an ungraded card.[2]
